A frequently heard comment by the person with hearing loss, as well as the family is "I can't stand it anymore!" In fact, the longer the avoidance of hearing loss goes on, the greater the frustrations. Communications depends on aural cues. Once this system begins to break down, frustration usually spreads into the lives of the entire family. For someone who doesn't have hearing loss, it's almost impossible to conceive the problem.
After all, there is no outward sign - no tumor on the head, no fractured joints, no walker in hand. All anyone observes is the effect of hearing loss, not the hearing loss itself, and it may be glossed over as no big deal.
