The nearly 36 million Americans who suffer from “Tinnitus” (commonly known as “ringing in the ears”) have often been told to “Live with it!” This is not very encouraging for them and the more than 7,000,000 who are so afflicted with constant ringing that they can’t lead normal lives.
What causes Tinnitus?
Most tinnitus comes from damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Advancing age is generally accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve damage, hearing loss and tinnitus. Younger people (and certainly those addicted to ear buds on MP3 players) who are exposed to loud noise have an increased risk of tinnitus and often damaged hearing as well. Some people may experience “subjective tinnitus,” the noise that only they can hear. Some causes, such as a plug of wax in the ear canal, might contribute to temporary tinnitus. Stiffening of the middle ear bones can also cause this symptom. Tinnitus can also be caused by allergy, high or low blood pressure, a tumor, diabetes, thyroid problems, injury to the head or neck, and a variety of inflammatories, antibiotics, sedatives, antidepressants and aspirin. If you take aspirin and your ears ring, talk to your doctor about dosage in relation to your size.
How to Treat Tinnitus?
In most cases, there is no specific treatment for ear and head noise. Thus the reason why sufferers have for years been told to “Live with it!” However, it is important to see an otolaryngologist to investigate the cause of your tinnitus and treatment. With that in mind, most causes cannot be identified. While some medications may help reduce the noise, this will require extensive trial and error testing. Another less trial-intensive way of reducing tinnitus is possible with new advanced-technology hearing aids that have just recently been introduced.

Often, just putting a pair of these hearing aids on will produce a noticeable reduction or elimination of “ringing in the ears” while the aids are worn. Some find that the loss is mitigated temporarily even after the aids are removed. Those who haven’t had a good night’s sleep in years due to the constant “ringing” will be thrilled to learn that there may be a relatively easy and inexpensive way to get relief…and know right away if this solution works before actually investing in the aids.
