"Some time ago, my colleagues and I were
challenged to going without one of our shoes. I
was the only person to accept the challenge and
therefore sacrificed my left shoe for what I
thought was a better prize. How foolish I was for
thinking so.
It began easily enough, a little awkward and a little teasing but nothing too severe. But the teasing and jokes did not let up. I thought lunch might bring a little relief, but again I was wrong. Walking across the parking lot in one sock and one shoe was embarrassing and I thought I held up well enough until I made it to the table. Feeling the looks of the other patrons as well as the constant comments from the staff was nearly unbearable. I felt very awkward and ashamed for my poor decision at this point.
Finally the end of the day arrived and I see my shoe being tossed at me from across the room. I looked at it and back to my superior wondering why, as this was not the deal we agreed to. I quickly put my shoe on and all he said was to share my experience with the class. I pondered and came up with this conclusion:
Going with only one shoe is very different from hearing loss in two ways:
I can always find another shoe to put on at my leisure.
Having one shoe is much more obvious than having a loss.
I realized from that point on I would be much more empathetic to those with a hearing loss. Many of those people, including my own father, deal with the awkwardness and embarrassment of having a loss. I have dedicated my career to making sure that no one leaves my office without understanding the choices they have to help their hearing loss. Everyone gets to put on the other shoe!"
